Weekend Argus x THRIVE: Thriving Youth Take the Lead in Philippi
Fifty young people from Nyanga and Philippi Village walked into a room on a Friday afternoon in December.
They had heard about workshops before. They had sat through awareness campaigns before. They had been lectured at, warned, and spoken to about gender-based violence more times than they could count.
And most of the time, they left feeling the same way they arrived.
Blamed. Excluded. Unseen.
This time was different.
16 Days of Activism — Answered Differently
On 5 December 2025, during South Africa's 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, THRIVE Initiative hosted a youth workshop in Philippi Village that responded to something most campaigns never acknowledge: GBV fatigue.
Young people in township communities across South Africa are exhausted by awareness campaigns that tell them what not to do, without ever asking them how they feel, what they carry, or what they need.
Particularly young men, who are so often framed as the problem rather than invited into the solution.
THRIVE Initiative did something different. They created a space that was honest, human-centred, and genuinely safe. A space where young people could explore the emotional and social pressures that contribute to harmful behaviour, including stress, identity struggles, and a deep lack of belonging.
Not to excuse violence. But to understand the human being behind it.
As Brian Segal, Founder of THRIVE Initiative put it: we are not excusing violence. We are addressing the root causes. If we want lasting change, we have to start with the human being behind the behaviour.
What Happened in That Room
Of the fifty young people who attended, 25 committed on the day to continue into THRIVE's six-week personal development programme.
Half the room raised their hands and said yes to going deeper.
In a landscape where youth engagement is one of the hardest things to sustain, that number speaks volumes. It says that young people in Philippi and Nyanga are not apathetic. They are not beyond reach. They are hungry for something real. Something that respects them. Something that actually works.
And THRIVE answered that hunger.
The Six-Week Programme: Going Beyond Awareness
For the 25 young people who committed to continuing, the real work was just beginning.
THRIVE's six-week follow-up programme moves far beyond awareness into genuine personal transformation. Rather than lecturing participants on what not to do, it creates space for honest, ongoing conversations about feelings, fears, and hopes.
Over six weeks, participants build:
Emotional literacy learning to name and understand what they feel rather than being driven by it
Communication skills developing the ability to express themselves clearly, listen deeply, and navigate difficult conversations without violence
Healthier relationships understanding what respect, boundaries, and genuine connection actually look and feel like
Self-regulation tools practical, body-based techniques for managing stress and emotional overwhelm before it becomes harmful behaviour
Accountability taking ownership of their choices and their impact on the people around them
Entrepreneurship building the mindset and confidence to create opportunity and take meaningful steps toward a self-determined life
This is not a once-off talk. It is six weeks of consistent, community-rooted, deeply human work, the kind that creates change that actually lasts.
Why This Approach Works
Communities are calling for connection, respect, and real solutions. THRIVE is answering that call with a fresh approach to preventing violence, starting with understanding the person behind it.
That is the philosophy that makes THRIVE different from every other GBV intervention.
Most programmes focus on the behaviour. On the outcome. On the violence itself.
THRIVE focuses on what drives it. On the nervous system. On the unprocessed pain, the disconnection, the identity struggles that sit beneath the surface of every act of harm.
Because you cannot lecture someone out of a state their body is locked into. You have to meet them there first. And then walk with them toward something different.
That is what THRIVE does. And the response from Philippi Village proved that it works.

This Is What Change Looks Like
Change does not start with a policy. It does not start with a campaign. It does not start with a hashtag.
It starts with a room full of young people who feel safe enough to be honest about what they carry.
And then it grows from there.
Fifty young people in Philippi Village. Twenty-five hands raised. Six weeks of work that could shift the trajectory of a life, and through that life, a family, a community, a generation.
This is THRIVE Initiative doing what it was built to do: addressing the root causes of GBV and social disconnection, one young person, one community, one honest conversation at a time.
Become a Sponsor
Behind every young person who walked through that door in Philippi Village is a community that believed in them.
But belief alone is not enough. Real change requires real investment.
When you sponsor THRIVE Initiative you are not just funding a workshop. You are funding a ripple effect, young people who go on to impact their families, their relationships, and their communities for generations to come.
Through the 1:1 Social Impact Model, every rand you invest reaches twice as far, into the schools and communities that need it most but can least afford it.
This is how South Africa heals. This is how GBV gets addressed at the root. And this is how a movement grows.
Partner with THRIVE today and help us reach more young people in more communities across South Africa.
