Saturday Star x THRIVE: Emotional Skills Are Replacing Discipline in South African Schools

South Africa's schools are facing an alarming rise in bullying and violence among learners.

And for too long, the answer has been the same: more rules, stricter discipline, harsher consequences.

But what if that approach has been making things worse?

On 12 November 2025, the Saturday Star, one of South Africa's most widely read weekend newspapers, featured the THRIVE Initiative and a bold new answer to one of education's most persistent problems: starting from the inside out.

Rethinking Bullying From the Ground Up

Brian Segal, Founder of THRIVE Initiative, has spent years studying what actually drives bullying behaviour in South African schools. And what he has found challenges everything most schools think they know about the problem.

Bullying does not occur in isolation. It is a symptom, not the cause. It often reflects unprocessed stress and pain from social, economic, and family pressures. Many learners are simply mirroring what they experience at home.

And here is the part that changes everything: when you reprimand a bully, you add to their internal tension, which often triggers more outbursts. But if you give them tools to express and manage those feelings safely, real change follows.

This is not a theory. It is a fundamental shift in how we understand human behaviour under pressure. And it is the foundation on which everything THRIVE Initiative builds.

South Africa's First Somatic School Intervention

Rather than relying on punishment, THRIVE's approach focuses on teaching three core skills: self-awareness, emotional regulation, and healthy communication.

The method is rooted in somatic healing, a body-based approach that helps release stress stored in the nervous system to restore calm and genuine behavioural balance.

When a learner is in a state of Fight, Flight, Freeze, or Fawn, no amount of discipline reaches them. They are not choosing to misbehave. They are responding to a nervous system that is overwhelmed and under-resourced.

THRIVE gives them something no detention or suspension ever could: the tools to recognise what is happening inside themselves, and the skills to do something about it.

A Historic Milestone: The First THRIVE Initiator Cohort

To bring this work into schools and communities at scale, THRIVE Initiative completed the training of its first ever cohort of 10 youth facilitators from Nyanga, Cape Town, one of the city's most challenging and most resilient communities.

These ten young people, aged between 20 and 24, are now officially certified as THRIVE Initiators, trained to facilitate interactive workshops in schools, youth groups, and workplaces across the Cape Peninsula.

In these workshops, they teach participants practical tools to:

  • Manage stress and emotional overwhelm before it becomes reactive behaviour

  • Build genuine empathy and connection with the people around them

  • Resolve conflict constructively rather than reactively

  • Communicate with clarity, self-awareness, and care

  • Develop accountability and personal leadership

  • Build entrepreneurial mindset and financial independence

Their work extends far beyond bullying, tackling gender-based violence, relationship challenges, community pressure, and the deep disconnection that drives so much social harm in South African communities.

Building Leaders, Not Just Learners

What makes this cohort so extraordinary is not just what they have learned. It is who they are becoming.

As Brian Segal described it: our Nyanga cohort represents the next generation of community leaders. They will not only help reduce violence and bullying in schools, but also grow as financial and social entrepreneurs, building a resilient ecosystem from within.

These are not just programme graduates. They are community-based entrepreneurs, equipped with both the emotional tools and the entrepreneurial mindset to build something lasting in the communities they come from.

That is the THRIVE model in its fullest expression: healing that creates leaders, who create more healing.
