Media Update x THRIVE: Empowering Youth from Nyanga to Transform Schools and Communities
Bullying is not the problem.
It is the symptom.
And until South Africa starts treating it that way, no amount of discipline, reprimand, or awareness campaigns will make our schools safer.
That is the powerful truth at the heart of the THRIVE Initiative, and on 6 November 2025, Media Update brought that truth to one of South Africa's most widely read media and marketing platforms.
A Milestone Moment for the THRIVE Movement
As South African schools continue to grapple with a worrying rise in bullying and violence among learners, THRIVE Initiative reached a significant milestone: the completion of training its first ever cohort of 10 youth facilitators from Nyanga, one of Cape Town's most challenging and most resilient communities.
These ten individuals, aged between 20 and 24, are now officially certified as THRIVE Initiators. They are trained, equipped, and ready to drive a somatically based intervention into schools and communities across the Cape Peninsula.
And this is only the beginning.
Understanding the Root of Bullying
Brian Segal, Founder of THRIVE Initiative, has always been clear about where the work needs to start.
Bullying is a symptom, not the cause. It is often an expression of unprocessed stress and pain that stems from social, economic, and family pressures. Many learners are simply replicating the communication and emotional patterns they experience at home.
And here is the part that most discipline systems miss: when you reprimand a bully, you increase their internal tension, which often leads to more outbursts. But if you can give them tools to release that pressure and express themselves safely, behavioural change follows naturally.
This is the insight that changes everything.
THRIVE does not believe the solution is more punishment or stricter discipline. THRIVE believes the solution is teaching new skills: self-awareness, self-regulation, and communication. Skills that reach the nervous system, not just the behaviour.
What Somatic Healing Actually Means
THRIVE's approach is grounded in somatic healing, a method that focuses on releasing tension from the central nervous system to bring about emotional regulation and genuine behavioural transformation.
In practical terms this means participants learn to:
Recognise the physical sensations and early warning signs of stress and emotional overwhelm in their own bodies
Take regulation steps that shift them out of reactive states of Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn
Communicate with greater clarity, empathy, and self-awareness
Respond to pressure and conflict rather than simply react to it
Build genuine connection with the people around them
This is not theoretical work. It is embodied, practical, and deeply human. And it produces results that no disciplinary system ever could.
Meet the First THRIVE Initiators
The ten graduates of THRIVE's inaugural facilitator cohort are not just programme alumni. They are community-based entrepreneurs and the next generation of South African change-makers.
Trained to facilitate interactive sessions in schools, communities, and workplaces, these THRIVE Initiators are equipped to teach participants how to manage stress, build empathy, and resolve conflict in a whole new way.
Their work extends beyond bullying into the full ecosystem of social harm, addressing:
Gender-based violence and the relational patterns that drive it
Relationship difficulties and communication breakdowns
Community pressure and the weight of social expectation
Accountability and personal leadership
Entrepreneurship and financial independence
As Brian Segal put it: our Nyanga cohort represents the next generation of community leaders. They will not only help reduce violence and bullying in schools but also grow as financial and social entrepreneurs, building a thriving, resilient local ecosystem from within.
Why Nyanga Matters
Nyanga is not just a location on a map. It is a community that has carried more than its share of South Africa's social wounds. High unemployment. Persistent violence. Young people navigating enormous pressure with very few tools and very little support.
THRIVE chose Nyanga deliberately. Not despite its challenges but because of them.
Because the communities that carry the most pain are also the communities that, when given real tools and real belief, produce the most powerful agents of change.
These ten THRIVE Initiators are proof of that.
