CapeTalk x THRIVE: A Major Breakthrough in Philippi Village — As Heard on Views and News with Clarence Ford

Fifty young people walked through the door.

Twenty-five of them decided to stay.

That is not just a statistic. That is a movement taking root right in the heart of Philippi Village, Cape Town.

THRIVE Initiative recently marked a major milestone in youth engagement and gender-based violence prevention, and the story was so significant that Founder Brian Segal was invited to share it live in studio with Clarence Ford on CapeTalk's Views and News one of South Africa's most respected and widely listened to mid-morning radio programmes.

This is what happened. And why it matters.

The Philippi Village Youth Workshop — What Took Place

In a community where young people are too often written off, overlooked, or simply not reached, THRIVE showed up differently.

At a recent youth workshop held in Philippi Village, 50 young people attended, turning up, showing up, and choosing to be present in a space designed specifically for them. A space built around honesty, emotional safety, self-discovery, and real conversation.

And then something remarkable happened.

Of those 50 young people, 25 committed to continuing into THRIVE's six-week personal development programme.

Half the room said yes to going deeper. To doing the work. To investing in themselves.

In a landscape where youth engagement is one of the hardest things to sustain, that number is not just encouraging. It is extraordinary.

Why Philippi Village Matters

Philippi is one of Cape Town's most densely populated and underserved communities. It is a place of incredible resilience, deep community spirit, and also like so many similar communities across South Africa, significant challenges around violence, unemployment, and GBV.

These are not abstract issues. They are the lived daily reality of young people growing up in Philippi.

And they are precisely the issues that THRIVE was built to address, not from the outside in, but from the inside out.

Because the root of GBV is not just circumstance. It is disconnection. It is unprocessed pain. It is a nervous system that has never been taught how to regulate itself. It is young people who have never been given the language to understand what they feel or the tools to do something about it.

THRIVE gives them that language. And those tools.

The Six-Week Personal Development Programme — What It Involves

For the 25 young people who committed to continuing, the journey is only just beginning.

THRIVE's six-week personal development programme is a deep, structured, and genuinely transformative process that takes participants through:

  • Self-awareness learning to understand their own internal world, their triggers, and the patterns that have been running their lives beneath the surface

  • Somatic tools practical, body-based techniques for recognising and regulating emotional states before they become reactive behaviour

  • Communication skills developing the ability to express themselves clearly, set boundaries, and build relationships grounded in genuine respect and connection

  • Emotional intelligence navigating conflict, pressure, and relationships with groundedness and care

  • Accountability taking ownership of their choices, their commitments, and their futures

  • Entrepreneurship building the mindset and confidence to create opportunity, think independently, and take meaningful steps toward a self-determined life

  • GBV prevention understanding the root causes of gender-based violence and developing the awareness and tools to break those cycles within themselves and their communities

This is not a once-off motivational talk. It is six weeks of consistent, embodied, community-rooted work, the kind that creates change that actually lasts.

Brian Segal Live in Studio with Clarence Ford

The story of Philippi Village resonated so deeply that Brian Segal was invited to share it live on CapeTalk's Views and News with Clarence Ford one of South Africa's most trusted voices in mid-morning radio.

In the interview, Brian spoke about:

  • What the THRIVE Initiative is and the movement it is building across South Africa

  • Why the Philippi Village workshop was such a significant breakthrough moment

  • What it means for 25 young people to voluntarily commit to six weeks of personal development work

  • How THRIVE is tackling GBV prevention at the root through emotional intelligence and somatic education rather than reactive intervention

  • What becomes possible when young people in underserved communities are truly seen, heard, and equipped

It is an 18-minute conversation that is well worth every second.

This Is What Change Looks Like

Fifty young people in a room in Philippi Village.

Twenty-five hands raised to go further.

Six weeks of work that could shift the trajectory of a life and through that life, a family, a community, a generation.

This is not a headline. This is the quiet, consistent, deeply human work of building a movement from the ground up. And THRIVE Initiative is doing it, one workshop, one young person, one community at a time.

Become a Sponsor

Behind every young person who walked through that door in Philippi Village is a community that believed in them.

But belief alone is not enough. Real change requires real investment.

When you sponsor the THRIVE Initiative you are not just funding a programme. You are funding a ripple effect, young people who go on to impact their families, their schools, and their communities for generations to come.

This is how South Africa heals. This is how GBV gets addressed at the root. And this is how a movement grows.

Partner with THRIVE today and help us reach more young people in more communities across South Africa.
